Diaper Bag Packing 411: Part 1

Packing a baby bag is a skill you perfect over time. Here’s what I keep in mine — from the must-haves to the “just in case” items — and how I’ve tailored it to fit my life as a new mom.

One of the most important things you’ll need as a new parent is a good diaper bag. From the time I went into labor to now (three months later), my bag has changed a lot.

As a new mom, I’m still figuring out what’s essential and—just as important—how to avoid overpacking. Before having my baby, I genuinely hated carrying big purses. Most days, my “bag” was just my cards and ID tucked behind my phone, a small backpack, or my trusty fanny pack (yes, I still wear them 😊). Post-baby, it’s been a whole new adjustment.

Which brings me to the big question: Is there a right way to pack a diaper bag?
Let’s find out together.

Picking the Right Diaper Bag

Start with what works for you. Think about:

  • Your style
  • Comfort level
  • Size preference
  • How much storage you realistically need

Some moms swear by traditional diaper bags, while others love a large tote or purse with compartments. Personally, I started with a big purse that had a few sections for organization. Now that my baby is 4 months old, I’m seriously considering switching to a backpack—it’s hands-free, compact, and easier on my shoulders.

What’s in My Baby’s Section of the Bag

  • Diapers (of course!)
  • Change of clothes & socks (because blowouts happen)
  • Lotion (for dry skin)
  • Nose cleaner (the tiny sniffles are real)
  • Extra bottles
  • Formula or breast milk (depending on the day)
  • Extra jacket (it’s getting colder outside)

What’s in My Section of the Bag

I like to keep my own essentials in the diaper bag so I don’t have to carry a purse. That means my:

  • Wallet
  • ChapStick
  • Gum
  • Lotion

Extra Add-Ons I’ve Learned to Carry

As I’ve gotten more experienced, I’ve realized these items save the day:

  • Portable changing station – Many public changing tables aren’t exactly… clean. This also comes in handy when visiting friends or family.
  • First aid kit – You never know when you (or someone around you) might need something.
  • Extra shirt for myself – Because spit-up and mystery stains are part of the job.
  • Poop bags – Perfect for dirty diapers, especially at someone else’s house.
  • Baby toys – Now that my little one loves to grab and chew on things, this keeps him entertained.

Final Thoughts

There’s no “perfect” diaper bag—it’s all about what works for you and your baby. As your little one grows, the items you pack will change too. Some days you’ll carry the bare minimum, and other days you’ll feel like you’ve packed for a weekend trip. Both are okay.
