Why Journaling Saved My Sanity (and Why You Should Try It Too)

Motherhood can feel overwhelming, but journaling has been my secret weapon for processing emotions, tracking milestones, and staying grounded. Here’s why I swear by it.

Making time for yourself is one of the most important things you can do — but I know, it’s easier said than done. Life gets busy, and finding even 10–15 minutes alone can feel impossible. Still, those minutes matter. They’re your chance to check in with yourself, see how you’re really doing, and give your mind and heart a breather.

Self-care doesn’t always look like working out, journaling, or reading. Sometimes it’s a good cry. Sometimes it’s a good scream. Whatever you need, give yourself permission to do it, and be honest with yourself — only you know what’s going to help.

How I Started Journaling

Lately, I’ve been changing my habits and trying new routines to make sure I’m mentally in check. One of the biggest changes? Journaling.

At first, I wrote just once a week. It might not sound like much, but it was enough to start clearing my head. Journaling gave me a place to dump everything — the little annoyances, the big worries, and the random thoughts that pop up out of nowhere.

I’ve always been an overthinker, and when your brain is cluttered with doubts, fears, and “what ifs,” it’s easy to lose sight of the blessings right in front of you. Overthinking doesn’t solve problems; it just drains you.

The more I’ve practiced, the more I’ve learned to replace negative thoughts with gratitude and possibility. It’s not instant, but the more you do it, the easier it becomes.

How Overthinking Can Affect You

During my research, I found that overthinking often leads to:

  • Negative thoughts
  • Anxiety
  • Mental exhaustion
  • Headaches
  • Difficulty focusing

And honestly? I’ve experienced all of them.

How Journaling Can Help

On the flip side, journaling can:

  • Improve memory
  • Help set and track goals
  • Reduce anxiety
  • Manage stress
  • Show progress over time

Just imagine what your life could look like after even one month of journaling. I’m about that far in, and the difference has been huge. I’m more focused, less stressed, and even inspired to work on things I’d been putting off — like this blog!ve if you just did a month of journaling. I’m right around that timeframe, and it has helped tremendously.

Journaling for Kids

Since this is a mommy blog, I also looked into whether journaling benefits kids. According to Scholastic, “It’s a great way to help your child build emotional expression, communication skills, self-awareness, and a healthy self-esteem through the power of a blank page.”

My son is only seven months old, but one day, this might be something I encourage him to try. Who knows — if I keep journaling, maybe he’ll grow up wanting to do it too.

Final Thoughts
Whether it’s journaling or another form of self-care, find your thing and make space for it. Even a few minutes can change the way you feel and think.
