Learning to Walk: Our 1-Year-Old’s Big Milestone
The wobbles, the tumbles, the cheers — our baby’s first steps are here! Sharing the joy (and a little chaos) of this unforgettable milestone
There’s something magical about your baby taking those first wobbly steps. My little boy is right in the middle of learning how to walk, and it’s a mix of excitement, nerves, and a whole lot of cheering from me in the background.
The First Signs
It started with him pulling himself up—first on his high chair, then on his walker, and most often on his favorite spot: the couch. He’d stand there, flashing me a big grin, and let go for just a split second before grabbing back on. I knew it was only a matter of time before those tiny feet would try it solo.
How We Practice
- Holding onto my hands and taking “big steps” across the living room, outside, and the kitchen
- Pushing a sturdy walker toy around the house
- Pushing his high chair like it’s his personal race car
- Standing against the wall with a toy in hand for balance
I let him explore and practice at his own pace—even if it means my living room looks like a tornado hit it. He also has his best buddy, our dog Jojo, following him at every turn like a tiny furry cheerleader.
Safety First
- Removing any tripping hazards from the floor
- Blocking off parts of the house where he can open doors or cabinets
- Making sure he’s always barefoot or in sturdy shoes for better grip
- Moving the dog’s food and water bowls (because splashing in them is apparently the best game ever)
The Emotions
Oh my goodness, how time flies. My baby is really trying to walk. Part of me wants to scoop him up and keep him little forever, but another part is bursting with pride. Walking feels like such a huge milestone—it’s as if he jumped from baby to toddler overnight. It’s a bittersweet reminder of how fast this first year has gone by.
Closing
Whether those first steps happen today, this weekend at his birthday party, or sometime after, I’m soaking in every wobble, every grin, and every determined little step. These moments are the ones I’ll carry with me long after he’s running circles around me.
I love you beyond words, sweet boy. You’ve made my life so much better.
~ God Bless ~
